Article Release in Time Magazine
Dr. Rania Awaad, President of Maristan, discusses the alarming rise of Islamophobia and the “modern media machine’s” messaging that enforces the othering of Muslim communities. The surge in hate incidents, notably in the United States and across the West, has been enabled by anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim rhetoric. This has profound repercussions for the health and wellness of the Muslim community…
“By diminishing the complexity of individuals and essentializing Islam, these colonial powers created a seedbed for the dehumanization and generalization of people today perceived to be Muslim or Muslim-adjacent. And perhaps most importantly, these kinds of hate crimes and the rise of Islamophobia have extensive, negative mental health impacts on Muslim communities in the U.S. and around the world.”
In this Maristan Ramadan series, join Dr. Rania Awaad and Shaykh Tariq Musleh on a journey inward. We will delve into the intricate relationship between the body and soul, and uncover the underlying emotional conditions that inflict our inner selves.
Guided by Abu Zayd al-Balkhi’s رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ timeless 9th century work, “Sustenance of the Soul,” we will become more adept to heal and navigate through the trials and tribulations in our lives.

“The presentation was concise and topic explained quite well. I look forward to attending the training on the east coast in NY!”
“Per my question in the session, I thought the content both general education and practical advice were invaluable. There were almost throwaway comments made that each was like a little gem!”
“One of the most professionally put together and organised Muslim training resources I have attended on a contemporaneous and relevant subject matter. The fact it was free was a bonus. Will be looking to book in to the full-day session, and will be donating some of those hard-earned dollars personally.”
“Thank you Dr Rania & Maristan, for such initiatives! Stigma kills!! And we love and appreciate you very much for destigmatizing issues surrounding mental health and suicide.
